Saturday, July 15th (Day 11)

Visiting the Atlas Coal Mine today, then driving the Dinosaur Trail and Hoodoo Drive around Drumheller. Tonight we’re checking out the Badlands Passion Play. Suppose to be cool with the Badlands setting. Wonder how it ends!

The Royal Tyrell Museum is really amazing. You could actually use a whole day to explore all it has. They should offer multi-day passes. Here’s a video someone posted with highlights:

The Cretaceous Garden I somehow missed:

The Atlas Coal Mine closed in 1984 I believe. They blocked the mine entrance, but for tourist they reopened a few feet. It’s just that it’s at the top of a large hill, so to see it they take you up the tipple (the large wooden ramp with the conveyor belt the coal comes down), then a bunch of opened stairs. You walk down the same way, so dad was very brave.

Did the Dinosaur trail. Think it was north from Drumheller to the very short Bleriot car ferry, with the World’s Largest Dinosaur, Drumheller’s Little Church, Horse Thief Canyon (horses would go into the canyon, then come out with a different tag) on the way, then Orkney Viewpoint and back south to Drumheller. We continued onto Horseshoe Canyon after that. We would have drive to the ghost town of Wayne but ran short on time.

Attended the Badlands Passion Play tonight. It was really good. The acoustics in the outdoor amphitheatre were amazing, and the actors used the different hills and valleys during the performance. At the end there were a bunch of Jesus in white cloth around the surrounding hills. You can’t take photos during the show, but I got one beforehand. The bugs got bad during intermission, so mom and I put on our special bug-repellent clothes. Intermission was wry successful as we went to the car to get our bug-clothes, beat everyone to the washroom, and got ice cream. We were parked near the rear of the parking lot, but we managed to beat everyone out of there too!

**They share a link with a bunch of their photos from the show since you can’t take your own, so I shared a few

Black Beauty (I believe it’s just the scull, the original I believe may have been off display -not the clearest explanation)
Hellboy (scull of a Regaliceratops – a type of Triceratops. Again, saw this the first time, but not the second)

*******

Hoodoo Trail (very slippery if you try to walk on them as some people did)
Photo bomb
The flag is the mine entrance
This is the tour we did – dad was very brave walking up these stairs, mom was fine because you don’t go very far into the mine.
Wooden tipple with the conveyor belt
Reached the mine entrance
Where’s Waldo Part II
Orkney Viewpoint (Red Deer River in background)
Ran just when I went to get a picture
They were beating Jesus on the highest mountain peak in the background, then he all of a sudden appeared on the set floor.
The Last Supper – Judas in front with blue hat, Matthew in front rightmost red hat (he was also the narrator)
Marys (topmost the Pieta)
